A homicide detective in the cold case division gets an edge when the ghost of a cop offers his assistance in Moats’ (Eulogy for Murder, 2016, etc.) lighthearted thriller.
After Detroit detective Russ Baker fails to thwart a ring of murderous thieves, he gets a demotion that puts him down in a basement full of cold case files. He’s all alone down there until he meets Detective Wesley “Wes” Loomis, who’s now a ghost after his corrupt partner shot him dead. Wes says that a man from “the dark place”—which he surmises is somewhere between heaven and hell—has enlisted him to help Russ. He can read minds and converse with other ghosts, which proves to be beneficial for closing old cases (and allowing lingering spirits to move on). Of course, Russ has to keep his new partner a secret because no one else can see or hear him, so he attributes the sudden breaks in unsolved cases to an unnamed source. Russ’ success so impresses his captain that he gives the detective an open case involving four murdered women, the victims of a probable serial killer. Preventing a fifth killing, however, won’t be easy, as Wes inexplicably can’t contact the victims’ spirits. Moats’ short, often jaunty tale has very few scenes of violence or instances of profanity. Humor, however, is in abundance; for example, Russ’ discussions with Wes often seem to others like he’s talking to himself. At other times, Russ worries about Wes’ persistent presence, especially when a woman invites herself to his house. There’s little to the actual mystery, though; pinpointing the guilty party doesn’t take long, and even Russ, as the narrator, acknowledges that Wes does most of the heavy lifting. Also, some descriptions are overly sparse; at one point, for example, the partners drop in on a suspect businessman who’s described only as a man “seated at his large desk.”

I have been a long time lover of Bob Moats books, especially the Jim & Penny series, but Ghost Squad blew me away. The premise behind the story is a ghost that helps a down on his luck ex-homicide detective solve cold cases after he screws up an investigation and lands himself in the basement cold case division by himself.I found the characters to be well developed and easy to fall in love with. Wes, the main ghost, was also an ex-homicide detective before his demise.
Ghost Squad is a novella so it is quick and easy to read; I finished it in 3 sessions pice the course of 2 days and found it hard to put down. There was action, compassion, friendship, and love all rolled into this excellent story.
I absolutely LOVE the plot line of this book; Non Moats has come a long way as an effective story teller and I can't wait to read the rest of the Goat Squad series!

Fabulous, hilarious paranormal whodunit!!! You have got to grab this book!! Personally, I have to catch up with the rest of the series as soon as I can!!
You want the good guys to win, and they do. A nice twist to an otherwise predictable ending. I look forward to reading more about these cops. I really loved hearing the names of local to me places... A nice little touch.
Enjoyable. The storyline is about solving cold case homicides. Exact police procedures such as evidence collection, arrests, etc. are not followed. No graphic brutality or drag-you-down drama.
Interesting characters and great dialogue.
Wes was a cop murdered by his partner. He, his spirit, has been sent to help homicide detective Russ work cold case homicides.

"Yep, I can do a lot of things. Mind reading is one of them. Unfortunately there's a lot of things I can't do, now that I'm on a spiritual plane of existence," the ghost said. "Like sex, I really miss that. I also miss a good hot dog from Tiger Stadium. And there's no TV in there, I've lost track of all my favorite shows. Hey, maybe this is he@@."
I may re-read this story. I look forward to reading about Russ, Wes and Mary in the next book "Ghost Squad 2 –Mary Had a Little Ghost"
I read a lot, usually a book a day since I've retired. After enjoying two very long a deep books I decided to read Ghost Squad that I got a while back. Now I'm sorry I waited to read this whimsical and well written story. After seeing all of the other books written by Bob Moats I'm eager to dive into the list. It's like brain candy after an intense thought provoking read. Thanks Bob.
This is an interesting story with interesting characters. This would best be described as a Short Story, it isn't a very big book. I enjoyed it enough to purchase the rest of the series (9 total) and I am enjoying them very much. While the author is taking short cuts with police procedures, it doesn't detract from the book as a whole. One thing that raised this to an extra star - - - - No Foul Language!!! Thank you!!!!!!
Paranormal is a new genre for Bob Moats, and he pulls it off beautifully. Detective Russ Baker has been demoted to cold case files for messing up his last couple of cases. Now he's also been assigned a ghost to help him get the cases solved. He didn't want a partner, especially a dead one named Wes who used to be a cop. The person in charge of the ghosts didn't care what Russ wanted. Poor Russ is struggling with getting used to Wes, finding out the woman of his dreams is marrying someone else, and his office is filled with all the ghosts from the cold case files. This book will grab your attention, and leave you wanting more.
This is certainly a different kind of story. When I first started reading my first thought was that this was a little juvenile humor. But then it really became interesting. Detective Russ Baker has been busted down to the Cold Case Room in the basement. Somehow he let suspects escape and was reprimanded by the demotion and put on probation. A ghost, Wes, shows up to help him. Wes is a former cop who was killed by his partner, a crooked cop, during a drug bust. Wes, using the spirits of the dead waiting in the Cold Case Room for justice for their deaths, starts solving cases and getting the attention back from his boss. The book ends with two unexpected twists. A real enjoyable book.
